The Azores are the North Atlantic's most spectacular archipelago, nine volcanic islands rising from the sea midway between Europe and America. São Miguel, the largest island, is an explosion of tropical greenery, emerald caldera lakes, bubbling geothermal springs and cliffs lined with blue hydrangeas. It's Europe's wildest, best-preserved nature destination.
Azorean cuisine is deeply tied to the volcanic land and the Atlantic. Cozido das Furnas (a stew slow-cooked in Furnas' geothermal earth), sopa de couve e chouriço, alcatra (beef stew in Terceira red wine), fresh fava beans, aged São Jorge cheese (the finest of the Portuguese islands) and Azorean pineapple (grown in geothermally-heated greenhouses) are flavors found nowhere else on earth.
The Azores are an outdoor-activity paradise. Whale watching (Europe's best spot, with 24 recorded species), hiking the calderas of Sete Cidades and Faial, surfing São Jorge's waves, diving crystal-clear waters among manta rays and turtles, and soaking in the thermal lagoons of Ferraria make for an exceptional eco-tourism offer.
Practical tip: São Miguel island is the gateway, with direct flights from Paris and Lisbon. Rent a car, since public transport is limited. The weather is fickle — be ready for rain and sun on the same day. Whales are seen May to October, peaking in June-July.
Estimated budget: Budget around €90-120 per day per person for activities, meals and transport (accommodation not included): €12-18 for a seafood meal, with car rental as the main expense (€30-50/day, nearly essential), and €40-60 for a whale-watching trip. The Azores remain more affordable than mainland Portugal thanks to small local restaurants.
Best time to visit: The best time is May to September, with whale watching peaking in June-July. The weather stays unpredictable year-round (rain and sun on the same day), so pack a waterproof jacket whatever the season.

Day by day
Day 1
The Sete Cidades Lakes
Nestled in a volcanic caldera 12 km around, these twin lakes — one blue, one green — owe their distinct colors to different mineral deposits, or according to legend, the tears of separated lovers. The best viewpoint, Vista do Rei, is reached by car or after a multi-hour hike from Ponta Delgada.
30 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada via the EN1-1, or regional bus from Ponta Delgada's terminal.
Ponta Delgada
The archipelago's capital, this port city preserves a historic center marked by Portuguese colonial architecture, with its black-and-white calçada cobblestone paving and the iconic Portas da Cidade gate. It's the natural starting point for exploring the rest of São Miguel island.
João Paulo II airport is 10 minutes from downtown by taxi; the historic center is entirely walkable.
Whale Watching
Thanks to nearby deep ocean trenches, the Azores offer year-round encounters with resident sperm whales and up to 24 other migrating cetacean species depending on the season. Boat trips mostly depart from Ponta Delgada and usually last 2 to 3 hours.
Boats depart from Marina Pêro de Teive in Ponta Delgada; online booking recommended.
Lagoa do Fogo
This crater lake, a protected nature reserve since 1974, can only be reached on foot via hiking trails offering a sweeping view over its deep blue waters ringed by green hills. Fog rolls in quickly here, so it's best to set out early in the morning for a clear sky.
25 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada; park at Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo, then a 1-hour hike down to the lakeshore.
Day 2
Furnas and Its Geysers
This village, perched on an active caldera, has the ground literally steaming and bubbling in its streets, with sulfurous fumaroles and hot springs right in the heart of Terra Nostra park. The traditional cozido stew is still cooked for hours in holes dug into the volcanic ground.
45 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada via the EN1-1, or regional bus (about 1 hour from Ponta Delgada).
Terra Nostra Thermal Pools
This 19th-century botanical garden holds a huge thermal pool with iron-rich, orange-tinted water kept at around 35-40°C year-round. The century-old trees and camellia beds surrounding it make it one of Europe's finest subtropical gardens.
In the heart of Furnas village, 45 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada; main entrance on Rua Padre José Jacinto Botelho.
Caldeira Velha
This thermal waterfall, tucked into a lush forest of giant ferns and hydrangeas, lets visitors bathe in naturally warm water beneath a curtain of cold water — a contrasting experience much loved by visitors. It's easily reached on foot from a small roadside parking area.
20 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada on the Lagoa do Fogo road (EN5-2A); small on-site parking, modest entry fee.
Surfing and Diving
Fully exposed to the Atlantic, São Miguel's coastline offers renowned surf spots like Ribeira Grande, while its volcanic seabeds draw divers and snorkelers hoping to spot manta rays and schools of barracuda. The water stays cool year-round, so a wetsuit is essential.
Santa Bárbara beach in Ribeira Grande, 25 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada, with surf schools on site.
Day 3
Angra do Heroísmo
Founded in the 15th century on Terceira island, this city was for centuries a strategic stopover for Spanish and Portuguese fleets crossing the Atlantic, which earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Its historic center with colorful façades and the São João Baptista fortress are among the best-preserved in the Azores.
SATA flight from Ponta Delgada (45 min) to Terceira airport, then 15 minutes by car or taxi to the historic center.
Flores Island
Reachable only by plane or boat from São Miguel, this UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve island takes its name from the blue hydrangeas that line its roads in summer. Its seven waterfalls and crater lakes make it one of the most spectacular hiking destinations in Europe, though it requires a dedicated trip.
SATA Air Açores flight from Ponta Delgada airport (1h15), several flights a week depending on season.
